ANIMAL CURIOSITIES

The world's most threatened animals

In this collection of images, we will highlight some of the world's most endangered animal species, including terrestrial, marine, and bird animals.

Through a series of extraordinary photographs, we will show the beauty and fragility of these species and their natural habitats. We might include images of African elephants, Siberian tigers, gray whales, emperor penguins, and many other animals, all at risk of extinction.

In addition, each photo could be accompanied by a brief description to raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity conservation and to provide information about the threats these species face.

We hope this photo gallery will inspire our viewers to take concrete actions to protect these precious animals and our planet.

The world's most threatened animals
Anthony Barnosky, a professor at the University of Berkeley, in California and an expert on biodiversity, points out how the effects of climate change (due to pollution, resource exploitation, acidification and global warming) are fueling at a frantic pace what he calls "the sixth mass extinction." But let's see which animals are the most threatened and at greatest risk of extinction on the planet. (Source: best5.it)

Siberian tiger
One of the most threatened animals is undoubtedly the Siberian tiger. There are more tigers in zoos than in the wild. While 5,000 survive in zoological parks, barely 3,500 remain in the wild, of which fewer than 400 are Siberian tigers.

Polar bear
It is estimated that there are about 25,000 polar bears in the wild today. The polar bear in 45 years has suffered a sharp decline due to pollution, human hunting and reduced prey. For scientists to threaten the existence of this white giant (3 meters by 6 quintals) is mainly climate change.

Red wolf
It was declared extinct in the wild in 1980, and only recently, after a controlled breeding project, was it reintroduced into North Carolina forests, where about 100 specimens appear to have successfully acclimated.

Right whale
Just 300-350 specimens live in the cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. Twenty years ago, only about 70 females were believed to be able to reproduce, having reached sexual maturity, around age 40.

Golden toad
The golden toad may already be extinct, since the last specimen sighted in its natural environment was in 1989. Searches in the eastern tropical forest of Costa Rica have so far been to no avail, which is why in 2004 the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed it as an extinct species in the wild.

Shark
Although it has been on Earth for 450 million years, it is now given up for dead. Every year more than 100 million sharks are killed for commercial purposes and by recreational fishing. Many species, including the hammerhead shark, are hunted because of their dorsal fin, considered a food delicacy in Asian countries, which is also being deterred by the 2013 trade ban.

Orangutan
Although it is one of the most peaceful creatures on the planet, the orangutan will soon disappear in the wild. On the island of Sumatra, only 7,500 orangutans remain, and for experts, they are too few to cope with the frenzied devastation of the habitat and the extremely long breeding times.

Rhinoceros
The International Union for Conservation of Nature's census speaks for itself: in three generations it has been brought within a hair's breadth of extinction, a victim of its own horn, a trophy worth $95,000 a kilo on the black market in 2013. Of the black rhino, the most endangered species, 5,000 survive. Of the white rhino, protected by parks and reserves, fewer than 20 thousand remain. But the pace of hunting (3 per day for WWF) is unsustainable.

California condors
The California condor is considered one of the most endangered birds. In the 1970s, there were only a few dozen of them, and only after great effort was it possible to raise their numbers to the current 170.

Hawksbill sea turtle
Since 1996, the hawksbill sea turtle has been listed as a critically endangered (critically endangered) species on the IUCN's Red list, the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List. In the last three generations, the population has declined by more than 80 percent, and although it is strictly forbidden to capture, buy or sell this animal or parts of it, it is hard to imagine that it can survive another 30-40 years.
