The orangutan rescue and rehabilitation center in Indonesia

Near what will be Indonesia's new capital city, Nusantara, there is an orangutan rescue and rehabilitation centre, the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF).

This place is home to 127 Borneo orangutans and 71 bears. The area covers 1800 hectares of forest that will later become part of the urban forest of the new capital city.

The country has started building the new capital city on an area of 56,180 hectares in East Kalimantan Province amid concerns about the effects of the city's development on the environment and indigenous people. According to the head of the Nusantara Capital City Authority Bambang Susantono, Nusantara is expected to replace Jakarta in the first half of 2024.

Orangutans, a threatened species
The orangutan is the only large primate currently found outside Africa, closely associated with the rainforest. The three existing orangutan species live in the forests of Borneo and Sumatra. The Bornean orangutan, in particular, makes up about 90 percent of all specimens while the remaining 10 percent relates to the two species that inhabit Sumatra.

The dangers to orangutans
Threatening the survival of these animals above all is the reduction of the habitat in which they live in, as forests are increasingly reduced due to deforestation and fires affecting them. On the island of Sumatra and Borneo, the forest where the orangutan lives in is being destroyed at an increasing rate.
