Regeneration: five animals that possess this extraordinary ability

Nature is extraordinary and never ceases to amaze.

There are animals with the most varied characteristics: animals with extraordinary speed, animals able to survive extreme temperatures or animals able to jump very high, just to give some examples. Animals can in fact possess abilities that make them unique and very interesting. Some of them are even able to regenerate: regeneration consists of replacing damaged parts of the body with copies identical to them.

Here are five animals that possess this ability.

Mexican tetra
The Mexican tetra is able to regenerate heart tissue after suffering severe damage to the heart. In a laboratory study (reported by Alex Therrien Health reporter, BBC News) it was discovered that the morphotype (of the fish in question) that lives in rivers possesses the ability to regenerate, while the morphotype that lives in caves does not. Although these two specimens belong to the same species, this ability belongs only to the morphotype that lives in rivers. The morphotype of the caves instead generates a scar.

Salamander
As reported by "Theguardian.com", the amphibious salamander possesses the ability to regenerate lost tail. In a few weeks the cells migrate to the wound regenerating a "fake" tail but perfectly functioning like the natural tail.

Axolotl
This animal shares with the salamander the ability to regenerate the tail, but can do even more. As reported by "Theguardian.com" this animal is in fact able to regenerate the limbs, skin and almost any other part of the body.

Starfish (Starfish)
This animal has an extraordinary ability: like other animals on this list it is able to regenerate the arms, but also to complete the process in reverse: to regrow an entire body from a lost arm. (source: "Theguardian.com").

Sea cucumber (Sea cucumber)
Another animal capable of regenerating is the sea cucumber: this animal can repair its organs in short periods of time. In about a week it can regenerate damaged parts of the body and heal wounds. ("Theguardian.com")
