There are many breeds of dogs in the world, each with their own characteristics that make them unique. Among the characteristics that can influence the choice of a dog is also their size, which is sometimes truly immense!

Many people love large dogs, which, however, due to their size, require special care and attention and obviously require a lot of space to stay fit.

Although dogs can be very tall, this does not mean that they necessarily have to be massive: some breeds are tall, slender and long-limbed, while others are inevitably robust and more imposing. Here are 10 of the world's largest dog breeds.

Neapolitan Mastiff
The Neapolitan mastiff ranges in size from 60 to 75 centimetres depending on sex and weighs 50 to 70 kilograms. The Mastiff is an excellent guard dog, but is also very popular as a companion dog.

English Mastiff
On average, the English mastiff measures about 76 centimetres, but unlike the Neapolitan mastiff its weight can be as much as 125 kilograms! Given its size, this dog needs special care and a proper diet, as the risk of obesity is very frequent.

Dogue de Bordeaux
The height of this breed is between 58 and 66 centimetres for females, weighing at least 45 kilograms, while males are at least 68 centimetres tall, weighing at least 50 kilograms. The dogue de Bordeaux likes to spend a lot of time with its owner and its temperament makes it a reliable guard dog, but it is also very agile: for this, it needs a lot of physical activity.

Newfoundland
Newfoundlands can grow to a height of 78 centimetres, with an average weight of up to 80 kilograms (males) and 60 kilograms (females). Many historical figures have owned dogs of this breed, including Napoleon, Wagner and Lord Byron, who loved his Newfoundland named 'Boatswain' so much that when the latter died, he dedicated an epitaph to him engraved on his grave.

Saint Bernard
The Saint Bernard can measure 95 centimetres, while the weight can be as much as 100 kilograms. The largest known St. Bernard (who lived between 1880 and 1890 in England) was called 'Lord Bute' and is said to have measured 109 centimetres at the withers and to have weighed an impressive 112 kilograms. In Italy, in the 1960s, a giant St Bernard called 'Mischa' reached a weight of 118 kilograms with a height of over 90 centimetres at withers.

Kangal Shepherd Dog
This breed measures up to 80 centimetres, but is less heavy than the Saint Bernard, reaching a maximum of 65 kilograms in males and 55 kilograms in females. These dogs were mainly bred as herd guardians, although today they are also popular in many countries as companion dogs.

Irish Wolfhound
The Irish woulfhound averages 83 centimetres in height and, unlike most other greyhounds, is also massive in build, weighing a minimum of 54 kilograms in males and 40 kilograms in females. Despite its size, the Irish greyhound is generally very docile and only becomes aggressive when defending its owner. In the past, this breed was known as the 'dog of nobility'.

Leonberger
Male leonbergers are 72 to 80 centimetres tall, females 66 to 74 centimetres, for an ideal weight of between 52 and 72 kilograms. The origin of this breed is very special: the leonberger is said to have been selected in the first half of the 19th century in order to reproduce the lion depicted in the coat of arms of the town of Leonberg, near Stuttgart. However, recent studies cast doubt on this historical reconstruction.

Deerhound
The deerhound, or Scottish deerhound, can measure up to 80 centimetres, but in relation to its height it is very slender: its average weight does not reach 50 kilograms. This breed is very good at hunting, but is nevertheless known to be extremely docile towards humans.

Great Dane
The minimum height of the Great Dane should be 80 centimetres and must not exceed 90, while the ideal weight for males is 70 to 90 kilograms, for females 60 to 80. The Great Dane is very popular and popular because, despite its size, it is an extremely sensitive dog and is by no means aggressive. In 2010, a Great Dane was proclaimed 'the tallest dog in the world' with an impressive 109 centimetres in height at the withers.
