CATS

Ten of the world's largest cat breeds

As with dogs, there are many differences in size (and more) between the various cat breeds. The FiFe Federation Internationale Feline recognises 41 breeds.

Some felines reach considerable size, sometimes weighing more than 10 kilograms, particularly male specimens.

Large cats are often chosen for their impressiveness and majesty, and sometimes their thick coat adds to their size: here are some of the largest cat breeds.

Maine Coon
The weight of the Maine Coon varies in males from 7 to 10 kilograms and in females from 5 to 7 kilograms, but there are record-breaking specimens that have exceeded the standard size and average weight, even touching 15 to 16 kilograms! Given their size, cats of this breed require a lot of care and are delicate in health.

Chausie
The Chausie weighs an average of 6-7 kg and is the result of a cross between the domestic cat and the wild jungle cat, from which it has retained most of its physical characteristics. Compared to other hybrids, this breed has a less wild character and generally hates solitude and prefers to be in close contact with its family.

Ragdoll
An adult female Ragdoll can weigh up to 7 kilograms, while a male can easily weigh up to 9 kilograms. What makes this breed look even bigger is its soft, voluminous coat, which can come in six different colours.

Ragamuffin
The Ragamuffin can also weigh up to 9 kilograms. One of the typical traits of this feline is its physical strength, combined with highly developed and toned muscles.

Savannah
The Savannah can weigh up to 13-14 kilograms, which makes it an imposing cat. The reason for its size goes back to its origins: this breed is a hybrid, i.e. the result of a cross between a domestic cat and a Serval, a wild feline native to Africa.

Norwegian forest cat
Similar to the Maine Coon, the Norwegian Forest Cat weighs up to 8 kilograms, but some specimens have exceeded the standard size by reaching up to 10 kilograms. This breed retains a fairly wild nature and likes to engage in movement and hunting rather than enjoying rest.

Siberian Cat
The average weight of the Siberian is between 7 and 9 kilos, but can be as much as 12-13. This breed derives from a natural selection between the wild forest cat and the domestic cat of Siberian Russia. The Siberian is known to produce very small amounts of the protein responsible for allergic reactions in humans, so it is in fact a hypoallergenic breed.

American Bobtail
The Bobtail has an average weight of between 6 and 9 kilograms in males and between 5 and 8 kilograms in females. Its physical characteristic is its severed tail, one third to one half as long as that normally found in cats of other breeds, similar to Isle of Man cats.

British Shortair
British Shortairs can weigh up to about 8 kilograms in male specimens, while females weigh about 4-5 kilograms. This breed is very tame and peaceful, but tends to put on weight, which is absolutely inadvisable given the size that these cats already have by nature.

Bengal Cat
Male Bengal cats can weigh up to 7 kilograms, two kilograms more than females. This breed is also originally derived from a cross, in this case between the domestic cat and the leopard cat, to which these mice owe their characteristic coat.
