Reasons why the dog shakes and when to be concerned

It is not uncommon for a dog to shake and the factors that can trigger tremor are many and varied.

While the dog may often shake for emotional reasons, it is also true that the tremor may be linked to some illness. Therefore, one should never underestimate this 'symptom' and one should pay attention if it is frequent and/or long-lasting.

Analysing the context can undoubtedly help to understand why the dog is shaking and to react accordingly, in order to try to establish whether or not action needs to be taken in consultation with a veterinarian.

Tremor caused by arousal
When the dog is particularly excited, this emotional state may cause him to shake. The tremor, in this case, helps the dog reduce the excess energy triggered by the excitement.

Tremor caused by old age
Tremor in older dogs may be caused precisely by old age. Prolonged tremor, in this case, could also be related to disease or pain.

Shaking caused by fear
Fear is one of the most frequent triggers of tremor in dogs. A frightened dog may be more likely to shake, partly because of the stress that fear can generate.

Tremor caused by muscle weakness
A dog's tremor can also be caused by muscle weakness, which often affects the paws (and this is where the tremor is mostly concentrated). Seeing a veterinarian in this case is certainly the right thing to do.

Tremor caused by disease
Several conditions can trigger tremor in dogs. When the symptom is not transient or occurs frequently for no apparent reason, consulting the veterinarian is necessary to find possible causes and treat them.
