Pond sliders, what to know to take care of them

When you decide to welcome an animal into your home, it is always good to inform yourself before taking this step.

Every animal has its own requirements, needs and peculiarities. Knowing this in advance means allowing the animal to live well, thus avoiding endangering its health and survival, albeit often unconsciously.

Not even the pond slider escapes this logic. It is an animal that needs a special habitat and requires attention, including the most appropriate food.

The first information to know
The first thing to know is that pond sliders are potentially very long-lived and that female specimens can reach a length of up to 40 centimetres. This means that they need a suitable place to live and that a small plastic tank is certainly not enough.

The ideal aquaterrarium
So that the pond slider can also live in a comfortable environment at home, the ideal solution is an aquaterrarium with a tank holding at least 30 litres of water. Inside, it is necessary that both water and terrarium are present, that the daily temperature is always around 24-26 degrees Celsius (and never below 20 degrees Celsius during the night), that a filter is present and that the water is changed at least every 10 to 15 days.

UVB lamps
Inside the aquaterrarium the dry area must be easily accessible for the turtle and the tank must be equipped with a UVB lamp with neon specifically for turtles, especially if the tank is located away from sunlight. The lamp is needed to replace the action of sunlight and must be installed in such a way that it does not harm the animal.

Nutrition
Pond sliders are omnivores and need a varied and balanced diet. In addition to classic dried shrimps, fruits and vegetables, raw fish, floating pellets to supplement the animal's diet and cuttlefish bone can be fed.
