A very tender southern white rhino cub is born in Safari West reserve: photos

At the Santa Rosa Safari West Nature Reserve in Sonoma County, California, USA, a baby southern white rhino was born on 2 April, for the first time in the park's history, to mother Eesha and father Ongava.

It is the first baby of this species to be born in the park, hence the joy of all those involved, who report that the baby rhino, named Otto Lang, is strong and bonding well with its mother. Dr Emily Cehrs, a veterinarian at Safari West, estimates that the baby weighs about 100 kilos.

Safari West is a 400-acre (160 hectare) private reserve located 12 miles north of the city of Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, US, owned and operated by Nancy and Peter Lang.

The mother, Eesha, arrived in the park in 2018, and has been very important as a testimony to visitors to the reserve of the conditions and dangers in which wild rhinos live today. It was feared that she would not be able to reproduce in captivity, but in 2020 she was introduced to Ongava. The first signs of Eesha's possible pregnancy were noticed in 2022.

The great work done by the American centre should also be emphasised. The selection of wild animals emphasises species native to Africa, including giraffes, rhinos, Cape buffalo, watusi cattle, antelopes, cheetahs, zebras, hyenas, primates and numerous bird species. The park is engaged in research, education, conservation and breeding programmes that, through exchange with other zoos and parks, keep the gene pool of the species involved in the programme healthy. The park is also home to species that are extinct in the wild.
